The University also has its own internship sites: the Field Experimental Station, research and training centres, and the Botanical Garden and Greenhouses, where biologists and landscape designers do their practical training.
The questions everyone asks first

The Visa and Registration Office handles residence registration and student visa extension for international students. Go there first — the deadlines are short and everything else depends on it.
A foreign citizen must obtain a Voluntary Medical Insurance (VMI) policy no later than 2 days after entering the Russian Federation.
The plan must include outpatient care, emergency dental care, a preventive medical examination, emergency medical services, inpatient care, and medical and medical transport repatriation.
You can buy the policy online or in person from an accredited insurance company.
This is the tightest deadline in your first week — do it before anything else on campus.
SNILS is your individual insurance account number in the Russian social insurance system. You need it for the Moscow Social Card, for employment and for a number of public services.
Apply in person at the nearest branch of the Social Fund of Russia (SFR). Bring an identity document (passport or residence permit) and a notarised Russian translation of it.
It is issued once and stays with you for life — no renewal needed if you change your programme, university or job.
The card is issued to full-time students of Moscow universities, including international students. You receive it as a student — it is not a benefits card issued to a privileged category.
Apply at mos.ru: find the service Apply for a Moscow Social Card, attach a photo and scans of your passport, proof of student status and your SNILS, then choose a public services centre (MFC) to collect it.
You need a SNILS number before you can apply.
Admitted under the quota of the Government of the Russian Federation: you receive the state academic scholarship for the whole period of study, regardless of your academic results.
In a state-funded place on general terms: you receive it on exactly the same terms as Russian students — no satisfactory grades and no academic debt after the examination period.
On a fee-paying contract: a state scholarship is not paid.
Certificates of study, extracts from official orders and applications related to your studies (internal University documents only) are all issued here, at a single desk.
Bring your passport or your student ID card.
The University has nine student dormitories on and around the campus. Each has its own manager, phone number and email — the full table is in the Accommodation section below.
Questions about moving in are handled by the Student Campus administration.
Weekdays and class days: college students 16:30–21:00, university students 11:00–23:00. Weekends, public holidays and non-teaching days: 11:00–23:00 for everyone.
Parents and close relatives may visit 11:00–23:00 on any day. Other visitors may stay no longer than 4 hours a day.
Children under 14 are admitted only with a parent or legal guardian. At the entrance a visitor shows photo ID.
Class 1: 9:00–10:35. Class 2: 10:55–12:30. Class 3: 13:00–14:35. Class 4: 14:55–16:30. Class 5: 16:50–18:25.
Every class lasts 2 academic hours; one academic hour is 45 minutes.
The timetable alternates between odd and even weeks — the first teaching week is an odd week. Classes above the line are held in odd weeks, below the line in even weeks.
With an unsatisfactory grade in one or two subjects, the Director of your institute may allow a retake after the examination period, within a set deadline. A retake requires an examination sheet issued at the Dean's Office.
No more than two retakes are allowed in a single subject, and the second is held before a panel.
If you do not clear your academic debt by the deadline, or fail three or more subjects, you may be dismissed for poor academic performance.
Textbooks are issued in September according to a schedule announced by the Dean's Office through group leaders and noticeboards.
The library holds more than 4.2 million items and has 1,000 reading seats.
Student work teams, the Volunteer Centre, the Student Research Society and the Language Educational Centre.
Art groups: “Kabluchok” Folk Dance Ensemble, “Flame” Ballroom Dance Studio, “Besedy” Folk Ensemble and the MuresFam creative group.
Sport: volleyball and basketball teams, the KIBERTIMKA e-sports team and the Equestrian Sports Complex. Two festivals shape the year — the Timiryazev Academy Autumn Festival for first-year students in October, and the Spring Festival.
The Office is your first point of contact for anything related to your status, documents and studies in Russia.
There is also the International Students' Council — a student body that supports the social adaptation of international students and represents their rights and interests.
What to do in your first days
Deadlines here are short — the insurance policy, in particular, has to be in place within two days of arrival.
For residence registration and student visa extension, international students should contact the Visa and Registration Office.

Classes, weeks and the examination period
Three things to understand in your first week: the timetable, odd and even weeks, and how the examination period works.
Every type of class — lecture, practical, seminar — lasts 2 academic hours. One academic hour is 45 minutes.
Class 1: 9:00–10:35. Class 2: 10:55–12:30. Class 3: 13:00–14:35. Class 4: 14:55–16:30. Class 5: 16:50–18:25.
The timetable alternates between odd and even weeks; the first teaching week is an odd week. In the timetable, classes above the line are held in odd weeks and classes below the line in even weeks.
At the end of each semester there is an interim assessment: the defence of term papers (course projects), credit week and the examination period.
Credit week is the last teaching week of the semester, when all credits are taken, including graded credits. The examination period follows it.
Examinations are graded excellent, good, satisfactory or unsatisfactory; ordinary credits are marked pass or fail.
You are admitted to credits and examinations once you have passed all continuous assessment, defended your term papers and submitted the practical training reports required by the semester curriculum.
If you miss two classes in a row in the same subject, you will be readmitted only with permission from the Dean's Office, issued after you explain the absences in writing.
Regularly missing classes without a valid reason may lead to disciplinary measures.
If you miss more than 15% of the classes in a subject without a valid reason, you may be dismissed from the University.
If you end the examination period with academic debt, you may be dismissed for poor academic performance.
In exceptional cases, with an unsatisfactory grade in one or two subjects, the Director of your institute may allow a retake within a set deadline. A retake requires an examination sheet issued at the Dean's Office.

The State Final Examination is the final stage of your studies: a state examination and the defence of a thesis. Only students who have fully completed the curriculum are admitted.
Students who pass all the final assessments are awarded the corresponding qualification and receive a state-recognised diploma.
A degree with honours is awarded if 75% of your final grades are excellent and 25% are good; credits are not counted. The state examination and the thesis defence must both be graded excellent.
You may be dismissed for poor academic performance, at your own request, for health or family reasons, or for breaching the University's charter, internal regulations, accommodation rules or the terms of your contract.
Dismissal is formalised by an order of the Rector on the recommendation of the institute.
You have the right to be reinstated within 5 years of dismissal, provided places are available and on the same funding basis as before.
Who receives a scholarship
How admission type — quota, state-funded place or contract — decides what you are paid.
Who it is for: students in state-funded places who finish the examination period with no satisfactory grades and no academic debt.
First-year students receive the basic amount in their first semester. Later payments depend on the ratio of good and excellent grades in your student record book.
Students admitted under the quota of the Government of the Russian Federation receive the state academic scholarship for the whole period of study, regardless of their academic results.
Students in state-funded places admitted on general terms receive the state academic scholarship on exactly the same terms as Russian students.
Students on fee-paying contracts do not receive a state scholarship.
Your institute's Dean's Office can tell you the current rates and payment dates.

Campus life
Studying is not the only reason people come here. This is where to start outside the classroom.
The primary students' trade union is one of the University's core student organisations. It represents and defends students' interests.

A student self-governance body representing international students enrolled at the University.
It supports the social adaptation of international students in Russia, protects and represents their rights and interests, and coordinates the activities and initiatives of international students and postgraduate students.
The Department organises student life, helps first-year students adapt, supports student self-government and develops the University's traditions.

Student work teams operate in construction, teaching, services and agriculture, giving you practical experience and extra skills.
Also: the Volunteer Centre, the Student Research Society and the Language Educational Centre.
Art groups help students express themselves in dance, singing, folklore and stage performance, and take part in concerts and festivals.
“Kabluchok” Folk Dance Ensemble — folk stage choreography that presents traditional culture on concert stages.
“Flame” Ballroom Dance Studio — European and Latin American ballroom dances, with training for performances.
“Besedy” Folk Ensemble — Russian folk song and folklore, keeping the tradition alive.
MuresFam creative group — contemporary dance and stage performance.

Teams are based at the Department of Physical Education and represent the University at city and national competitions.
Volleyball and basketball teams (men's and women's), the KIBERTIMKA e-sports team and the Equestrian Sports Complex.
The Timiryazev Academy Autumn Festival is a festival for first-year students, held in October. Preparation starts in the very first days of term: teams are formed and original acts are created, ending with a gala concert.
The Timiryazev Academy Spring Festival is a large-scale festival for students from every institute, the College and the Kaluga Branch, with a final gala concert in academic building No. 29.

A food hub where science meets real production: a teaching and research site where students create food under the guidance of professional technologists.
Express counters for the 15 minutes between classes, and part of the hall works as a full-service restaurant.

The Timiryazev Academy newspaper has been published for 100 years, every two months, with 4–8 pages on the life of the University.
